The series of Jem begins when Jerrica Benton's father Emmet Benton dies. After the funeral, Jerrica soon discovers that the conniving Eric Raymond who is left in charge of Emmett's music company: 'Starlight Music' takes control of the company as he sees fit and goes against Jerrica's wishes and introduces a hard edge band called the Misfits. Jerrica does not hit it off well with the Misfits and Eric will not help Jerrica when she needs fund for Starlight house which is the foster home for girls that she takes care of. Just when Jerrica needs to find a way to stop Eric, a super computer named Synergy who was created by her father Emmett, reveals herself to Jerrica through a pair of earrings which are Synergy's microprocessors. Jerrica and her friends Aja, Shana and Kimber go to the hideout that Synergy is kept in to see this computer for real and see that Synergy can create three dimensional holograms. Jerrica comes up with a way to stop Eric Raymond and with the help of Synergy's holograms, Jerrica becomes Jem through a holographic disguise and her and her friends form the band Jem and the Holograms.
 
    When Jem and the Holograms hit the music scene, Eric challenges Jerrica in saying he will make the Misfits more popular than Jem and they agree that in six months in the battle of the bands, the best group takes control of Starlight Music.
 
    Throughout the series, there are a number of different elements and story lines based on various characters throughout the show. The show is very action and adventure based and keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat awaiting the result of the cliff hanger.
 
    One of the key relationships in the series is between Jerrica, Jem and Rio. Rio is Jerrica’s boyfriend, yet he does not know Jerrica is Jem. He also shares his feelings for Jem and thinks he is cheating on Jerrica. But Jerrica thinks if she tells him the truth that she will lose Rio and therefore, we have the love triangle.
 
    The rivalry between Jem and the Holograms and the Misfits is extremely competitive. It’s The Misfits who are the instigators of trouble, as their name says it all. The Misfits are devious in their tricks and games against Jem and the Holograms and often find themselves aiming for the ultimate prize that only one band can win.
 
    Later in the series, a new band called ‘The Stingers’ joins the show and throw in their own style of conflict that changes the element of the show, as The Stingers are a mix of the bad and the good and have their own style of tricks of entertainment.
 
     The series catch phrases are ones of ‘Glamour, Glitter Fashion and Fame’, yet the series focuses on every day real life issues such as friendships, families, outcasts, dealing with rejection, trying to fit in, drugs, confrontations, ambitions and so much more. The series is one that appeals to both girls and boys and of many ages.
